Ganku (1749-1838) was born in Kanazawa, Kaga Province (present-day central Ishikawa Prefecture) and later moved to Kyoto. He independently studied the painting styles of the Maruyama and Shijô schools and the Chinese Qing-dynasty (c. 1644-1912) painter Shen Nanping (fl. late-17th to mid-18th c.) and integrated these various styles and techniques to establish his own school. He showed great skill in painting flowers and birds, landscapes, and figure and was especially famous for his tigers.
