During the Kangxi era (1662-1722) of the Chinese Qing dynasty (1644-1911), the emperor had commissioned the production of several gourd-shaped objects, such as brush holders, bowls, and lidded containers. This calligraphic work is a poem composed by the emperor lauding gourds. The scholar Luo Zhenyu (1866-1940) later added an inscription at the end of this work.
