This illustrated handscroll, based on the epic narrative Heike monogatari (The Tale of the Heike), is executed in monochrome ink lines (J., hakubyô-ga), using no color. Despite its sense of desicated spareness, it powerfully depicts scenes of this epic tale.

This scroll has a small format (J.,ko-e) that is half the height of most handscrolls. It was probably the treasured possession of the daughter of a shogun or courtier.
