Dog-shaped boxes were made in pairs out of papier mache. Because dogs were thought to safely give birth to many pups, these boxes were used as protective charms for childbirth. In the Edo period (1603-1868) these boxes were also displayed with [hina] dolls in prayer for the safe passage into adulthood and the happy future of young girls.(20170221_h14特集おひなさま)
