This work was exhibited at the Vienna World Exposition and later salvaged from the sunken ship Nil. The square dish style was Kenzan’s specialty, as seen in [Dish with Chinese Poet Viewing Seagulls], another of his works in the Tokyo National Museum collection. Kenzan was the younger brother of Ogata Korin, a popular artist of the Edo period, and is known for his superb forms. The discolored surface of the dish retains rough signs from the accident at sea.
