This vase was submitted to the Vienna World Exposition in 1873, which was the first exposition Japan attended as a modern nation. Despite its size, the vase shows a tendency of Japanese decorative arts at the time to focus on fine details, with many techniques apparent in the vase’s decoration. Yokoyama Takashige (Yokoyama Yazaemon I) was a metal caster from Takaoka, while Kojun (Yazaemon II) was his son, which makes this vase a father-and-son collaboration.
