Tesshu Tokusai was a priest in the Rinzai sect during the Nanbokucho period (1336-92). He studied Buddhist law in Yuan China, and after returning to Japan he took up residence at Manjuji temple. Skilled at suiboku painting, he also occupied himself with calligraphy. This subject of this piece is a poem by the Chinese poet Gu Dao. The subdued Japanese-style calligraphy contrasts with the Chinese-style poem.(20060719_130625_h033)
