The Buddhist sutra transcribed here is well known for explaining that women – not just men – can become enlightened and attain Buddhahood. The transcription was made as a prayer for the repose of a noblewoman of the Heian period (794–1192). It was made by connecting her letters into a scroll, adding ruled lines, and transcribing the sutra’s text over her handwriting. The text on the first page is written in lavish gold pigment.
