This portrait of Uesugi Yozan (1751–1822), lord of Yonezawa domain, was commissioned by Mishima Michitsune, a governor of Yamagata prefecture who forcefully promoted the modernization of Japan. This realistic painting is important because of its use as an educational tool for encouraging the people to emulate the renowned Yozan.(161025_h18)
