This is an unusual work in which one’s life is compared to climbing a slope. The lower scene portrays a newborn baby in a house and children playing nearby. The upper scene shows a young man maturing, growing old, and dying in due course as he climbs the slope. This transition is symbolically depicted with plum, cherry, and pine trees, as well as those that change color in the autumn and shed their leaves.
