Kuroda gained the inspiration for [Telling an Ancient Romance] when he travelled to Kyoto in 1893. There he heard a priest at Seikanji Temple recount the tragic romance of Lady Kogo, a story from the Japanese classic [The Tale of the Heike]. Kuroda completed this painting after executing meticulous sketches and oil studies of each of its six figures. Unfortunately, the finished work was destroyed during the Second World War.
