Nichokuan, an early Edo-period painter, was born in Sakai as the son of Soga Chokuan, the founder of the Soga school of painting. Nichokuan excelled at painting birds, flowers, figures, and, in particular, falcons. He probably prospered with the support of warrior families. He inherited his father’s impassioned brushwork, but comparatively, Nichokuan’s style features a gentle, delicate level of expression.(130521_h07)
